A few Fridays ago, Linda, Ashley, Amanda, and I dined at Westville East for some laid-back affordable good eats. It was a surprisingly nice evening, so we opted to eat outside. I had also just picked up the 35mm f1.4 lens that I rented for the weekend, so I was eager to give it a test run. I must say, while I DID like the lens a lot and how fast it focused, I'm not sure the 35mm focal length is all that useful to me. Maybe this is because I already own the 24-70mm and can use that just fine in f2.8 conditions. Or maybe I just don't know how useful it could be without using it in some more situations. (Forgive me Jackie, but I didn't quite fall in love with it the way I had expected to. I suppose my wallet can sigh some relief for now. :P)
We all shared a platter of sides (definitely the way to go here) and then each had a salad*. Portions are sizable here.
Aw, they so cute.
*Hey, it's summer, OK? And mine happened to contain fried shrimp and fries. Surely you'd expect nothing less from me.
wow!! the bokeh and the sharpness are amazing!!! this is my dream lens, one day i'll own this <333
ReplyDeleteit's 00:55 here where i am, and i'm really hungry looking at your pics.. looool
love it!!
but what about in f/1.4 situations??!!!??!! that's when it'll shine. :) i could swear these pictures have a "look" to them that looks like the 35L but don't test me on it.
ReplyDeletebut oh well, there's lots more lenses that the money could be put toward! :)
35mm is a hole in my prime lineup, too. that's 2 stops of depth that can't be simulated by the zoom. but if it doesn't work you, absolutely save the money towards something you really need. like food :)
ReplyDeletemy current dilemma is whether to get the film camera-friendly version, or the brand new digital version...:(
great shooting and presentation, as always. thank you for sharing the experience.
the food looks sooo awesome! i actually just bought my 35mm 1.4. I think the situation i'll find it most useful is shooting indoor w little light and i need something wide with large aperture. my 50mm 1.4 just hasn't been wide enough. i know jackie is a big fan of it, so i hope i'll like it as much as she does!
ReplyDeleteoh! this looks like so much fun. :)
ReplyDeleteI love that lens and the 50 1.2 and shooting on a crop both are tough length i rather regret renting both as now nothing I have compares
ReplyDeleteThose salads look AMAZING!
ReplyDeletegreat set of pictures! i also just tried the 35mm (but the f2.0) and I am also not so sure about it... the 50mm f1.4 is too much crop for me, but the 35mm? mmh, anyway loving your pictures :)
ReplyDeleteI was going through a wide-angle dilemma the other day myself - 50mm is the widest lens I have, and I was considering buying the Nikon 24mm, but then I started wondering JUST HOW MUCH I'd actually use it, as I tend to shoot tight more than wide. But, maybe that would push me to expand my horizons? How do you like your 24-70? I don't own any zooms, so it might be fun to go that route, too.
ReplyDeleteAnd I would totes eat a salad with fries and shrimp on it, NO MATTER what season of the year it was! =)
@Kim, the 24-70 is a really versatile lens which is great, but if I had my way, I'd just stick to shooting primes and probably my widest would be 50. Although I am eyeing a nice wide tilt shift... I do like the 24-70 for large groups and the 70mm end acts like a macro.
ReplyDeleteoh yum. yum yum yum. Now I'm really jonesin' for some fries!
ReplyDeleteyum, that looks like an awesome lunch & I love the portraits
ReplyDeleteMy X100 has a 35mm equiv on it. Gotta say, I love that focal length for general purpose stuff. My fave would have to be my 24 1.4 though. I rented the 35 1.4 AFS from Nikon the other week and loved it, but it aint no 24 =D
ReplyDeletewill definetely visit this place, the food looks delicious ! :)
ReplyDeletethat green drink looks so refreshing! fries in salad, what a pittsburgh thing to do!
ReplyDeleteit all looks great! nothing wrong with chips and prawns in a salad!
ReplyDeleteI gotta say I didn't realise at first that shrimps meant prawns. Silly Australian me.
