Hot Pot

The five of us -- mom, dad, J, (and Avedon sort of!) -- enjoyed a nice hot pot in our tiny apartment yesterday for a very untraditional Thanksgiving. I grabbed a few photos of the set up and spread.

For the sauce, we mix satay with peanut butter and cilantro. I like to add some hot chili paste to mine as well. We started with chicken broth, added a ton of mushrooms, napa cabbage, other leafy greens (that I'm not sure what their English name is), egg dumplings, fish tofu, tofu, tofu noodles (so interesting!), vermicelli, duck slices, brisket slices, giant shrimp, rice cakes, etc.

It was a crowded table, that's for sure.

I just had leftovers for lunch. And there's still so much more!

  1. I love hot pot, especially how the broth gets richer and richer as the meal goes on. What lovely photos. The black and white is especially stunning.

  2. One of my favorite restaurants in Portland that I don't get to visit often enough is a hot pot buffet. I just adore the food. So delicious and filling, the perfect winter food!

  6. Oh my God, I would trade a traditional thanksgiving (or any other dinner) for that ANY time!! Looks absolutely amazing!!! Don't suppose you could post up the recipe in more detail???

    1. Hi Barbara -- the cool thing about hot pot is there is really no recipe! You need a large appropriate pot (the one here is actually made specifically for hot pot). We just added chicken broth, some salt to taste, and then just start tossing whatever you want into the broth. Many Asian supermarkets will have pre-sliced packages that are specifically made for hot pot ease. :)

  13. Mmm love hot pot, especially in the cold of winter/fall. I need to get myself one of those electric ones that you have though. Using gas just seems so ghetto now.
