Recharge

Oh freelance life. I was totally crazed out of my mind in April and May, and then found myself with a mostly empty schedule in June. Of course, it's never truly empty and free. I had meetings, calls, discussed future projects, and tackled my inbox. It was a good time to recharge a bit, do some reading (currently reading this guilty pleasure, and this much more respectable read), etc. Thankfully I know things get a bit crazy again in July, so I suppose I should take advantage of this free time while I can (oh wait, I did – I finished Season 3 of Orange Is the New Black in 2 days, so there's that). I really wanted to churn out more blog content during this slower time, but of course it works out that the more time I have to blog, the less motivation or inspiration I have to do it. Sigh.

Other things: (above) From a meal I made earlier this week – wild king salmon with green sauce and other random things.

I got my hair drastically chopped again.

Some tips from me about taking photos with your smartphone for Real Simple's July issue. (Many of these are basic, but hopefully will still be useful to some.)

I'm traveling to Montreal next week and haven't been since I was like 11, so I'm pretty excited about it. Any recs, do leave in the comments!

  1. Hi Alice, I was in Montreal earlier this year and I loved this cafe called Olive et Gourmando. It was packed with locals and tourists and was just so cute. There are a couple pics here on my re-cap post (http://jhaneellockhart.com/2015/03/08/snapshots-winter-in-montreal/), if you're curious. If you're into cocktails, I'd also recommend Le Mal Necessaire and Le Lab.

  4. Your dinner looks tasty and healthy! Well done on finishing OITNB in two days; I tried spreading it out but still ended up watching like three episodes in a day. Enjoy Montreal! Make sure to eat lots of poutine! And climb Mont Royal if you have time!

  11. I've been living in Montreal for the past two years. I suggest Old Port - yes, it's a classic touristic spot but probably still a must see, European vibe, central, good cafes and restaurants (Le Serpent between Old Port and Griffintown is a super hip new restaurant, it's good). I'm in love with Mile End, this area moves a lot during the weekends and offers some of the best food experiences in town. Lawrence would be great both for brunch and dinner, Sparrow right across the street is the nicest bar with beautiful art deco ceilings, cafe Olimpico nearby is definitely a Montreal institution. Rue Bernard from Mile End to Outremont is a lovely walk, and Theatre Outremont is currently one of my favourite buildings in the city (another is Habitat67, for the true minimalists of course). Downtown is rather plain and limited in terms of good food and coffee choices, so I suggest to avoid it. If you find yourself trapped there, cafe Parvis and bar Furco are alright. Ah, and Joe Beef in Little Burgundy is probably the best restaurant in town, but the wait list is about 2 months. I heard Liverpool House next door (same owners) is not bad too.

  12. I gave a chance to OINB 3 but the first episode seemed so but so trashy that I didn't want to waste my time seeing the entire season. Especially when there's some very good new stuff going on in the series world. Take a look to Bloodline.
